According to LinkedIn job ads, the New York-based financial-services giant is looking for a vice president and senior vice president for its anti-money laundering division to explore risks associated with money laundering in bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.


Iceland’s “Big Bitcoin Heist” Suspect Escapes From Prison

The suspected mastermind behind the theft of 600 bitcoin mining rigs in Iceland has escaped from prison and fled to Sweden, police said.

Sindri Thor Stefansson escaped through a window of the low-security Sogn prison in rural southern Iceland. Guards only realized Stefansson was gone after he had boarded the Icelandair flight bound for Stockholm’s Arlanda airport at Keflavik Airport.


New York Attorney General Launches Fact-Finding Inquiry Into Crypto Exchanges

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has launched a fact-finding inquiry into the policies and practices of cryptocurrency exchanges.

Called the “Virtual Markets Integrity Initiative,” the inquiry seeks to improve transparency and accountability of major cryptocurrency trading platforms to protect cryptocurrency investors. The AG’s office has already sent letters to 13 cryptocurrency exchanges requesting key information on their operations,


Central Bank-Issued Cryptocurrency Could Impact The Financial System, Says Bank of Japan Official

Bank of Japan Deputy Governor Masayoshi Amamiya said that a central bank-issued cryptocurrency could significantly impact the current structure of the banking system.

In his closing remarks at the IMF-JFSA-BOJ Conference on FinTech, Amamiya said that the issuance of central bank digital currencies for general use could be analogous to allowing households and firms to directly have accounts in the central bank.


Blockchain Share Register For Non-EU Companies Planned By Lithuania

The government of Lithuania is planning to create a blockchain system for overseas businesses to remotely register and manage their company in the European Union. The plan has been endorsed by the Bank of Lithuania, the country’s central bank.

The blockchain system would allow Virtual Limited Liability Companies (VLLC) to gain access to Lithuania’s innovation-friendly sandbox regulatory system that helps newcomers to set up operations.
