Bitcoin Exchange In Canada Hit By Armed Robbersbr>
Ottawa police are seeking two suspects after employees of cryptocurrency exchange Canadian Bitcoins were bound by armed men in an attempted armed robbery.
According to the police officers, three men armed with guns entered the office of the crypto exchange in Ottawa on Tuesday morning. The men bound four of the employees, striking one of them on the head with a gun. A fifth employee who happened to be in another room managed to contact the police. The police said the suspects attempted to get the employees at the exchange to complete an outbound transaction.
One suspect was arrested without incident while two others were still at large. The arrested man, identified as 19-year-old Jimmy St-Hilaire, was charged with five counts each of robbery, pointing a firearm, and forcible confinement. He also faces charges that he carried a concealed weapon and had a loaded gun to commit a crime while banned from having firearms.
Ottawa Police are searching for the other two suspects, and are hoping to speak to a person of interest who was inside the business when the three suspects arrived.
A spokesperon for Canadian Bitcoins confirmed the incident. “Yesterday, there was an attempted robbery at our office in Ottawa,” the spokesperson said. “As police have mentioned, no one was seriously hurt during the incident, but one staff member did sustain minor injuries. Our focus is on supporting our staff at this time, as well as working with the police in their investigation.”
