Singapore Airlines‘ KrisFlyer will be launching a new digital wallet app based on blockchain technology.

Singapore Airlines (SIA) is the flag carrier airline of Singapore. Singapore Airlines was the launch customer for the Airbus A380, the world’s largest passenger aircraft. It ranks amongst the top 15 carriers worldwide in terms of revenue passenger kilometers, and is ranked 10th in the world for international passengers carried.

KrisFlyer is the frequent flyer program of Singapore Airlines and is designed to reward everyone who loves to travel. A new Krisflyer digital wallet app employing blockchain technology is expected to be rolled out in the next six months. SIA said the digital wallet app will help “unlock the value of KrisFlyer miles to enable everyday spending at retail partners.”

The app will be introduced in the Singapore market first after a proof-of-concept exercise with KPMG Digital Village and Microsoft.

SIA CEO Goh Choon Phong said the initiative will bring more benefits to members of the KrisFlyer program. It is in line with SIA’s recently-unveiled Digital Innovation Blueprint, under which the group aims to be the world’s leading digital airline.

“This groundbreaking development in which we will be using blockchain technology to ‘digitalize’ KrisFlyer miles is a demonstration of the investment we are making to significantly enhance the digital side of our business for the benefit of our customers,” said Phong.
