Iceland’s Bjork Accepts Crypto for New Album

Icelandic singer and songwriter Björk has announced that fans will soon be able to purchase her new album, Utopia, with bitcoin, Litecoin, Dash, or AudioCoin. Fans that pre-order her latest album will also receive 100 AudioCoins as a bonus. Utopia is expected to be released on November 24.

Bjork’s One record label and Little Indian Records teamed with B2B blockchain solutions company Blockpool to accept and distribute cryptocurrency as part of the release of the album. Blockpool will use it’s proprietary blockchain integration technology and checkout plug-in to build a smart rewards system.

Blockpool said that once users check out out of the Björk store, they are invited to claim rewards (in this case AudioCoins) at MyBlockpool, the hub of Blockpool’s blockchain integration technology. In this first iteration, users can select rewards from brands and create wallets for Blockpool (BPL) coins along with bitcoin, Litecoin, Audiocoin and Dash. They can move coins around, use the geolocation app to earn mobile rewards, and engage with crypto.

Blockpool said that current streaming services are failing to provide artists with fair incomes, stating that decentralized music currency rewards fans and artists at the same time.

“This really isn’t a marketing strategy with Björk,” said Kevin Bacon of Blockpool. “This is a decision to be a leader. In fact, it’s just the obvious thing to do for her. If I wasn’t involved in this project, I’d expect Björk to be a leader in this area, and for her team to be doing creative things with crypto.”

Over her four-decade career, Björk has developed an eclectic musical style that draws on a wide range of influences and genres spanning electronic, pop, experimental, classical, trip hop, IDM, and avant-garde styles. She initially became known as the lead singer of the alternative rock band The Sugarcubes, whose 1987 single Birthday was a hit on US and UK indie stations and a favorite among music critics.

Björk embarked on a solo career in 1993, coming to prominence as a solo artist with albums such as Debut (1993), Post (1995), and Homogenic (1997), while collaborating with a range of artists and exploring a variety of multimedia projects. Several of Björk’s albums have reached the top 20 on the Billboard 200 chart, the most recent being her 2015 album Vulnicura. Björk has had 30 singles reach the top 40 on pop charts around the world, with 22 top 40 hits in the UK, including the top 10 hits It’s Oh So Quiet, Army of Me, and Hyperballad.
