The government of Malta has formed a new task force which will provide the roadmap for implementation of the national blockchain strategy.

The task force will be chaired by Vincent Muscat, Permanent Secretary for the Parliamentary Secretariat. Muscat will be assisted by members Steve Tendon (Blockchain Expert), Dr Ian Gauci (Legal Expert), Joseph Cuschieri (MGA Executive Chairman), Loui Mercieca (Blockchain Expert), Wayne Grixti (MITA Enterprise Architect), Carlo Stivala (Finance Expert), and Mario Borg (Economist).

Back in April, Malta’s Cabinet approved the first draft of a national strategy to promote blockchain. This was followed by a call for proposals by the Parliamentary Secretariat for the digital economy from seven financial services advisory companies.

The government of Malta is looking into setting up a new regulatory function, with the primary objective of harnessing the technology with a legal operational framework leading to the formation of an ecosystem for those willing to invest in blockchain technology.

Silvio Schembri, Parliamentary Secretary for Financial Services and the digital economy, noted that interest from local and international private investors was significant and that the government would remain available to discuss innovative ideas rendering this disruptive technology into a catalyst for the further growth of Malta’s digital economy.
