Azerbaijan’s State Customs Committee has teamed with tech giant IBM to use blockchain technology in customs procedures.

During a press conference at IT/TI Conference and Exhibition of the World Customs Organization, Safar Mehdiyev, the committee’s chairman, said that this year there are plans to start introducing blockchain in all types of cargo transportation, adding that the apllication of the technology will allow sending information about container shipments to the database.

“It will be possible to obtain the necessary information from the database online, without outside interference,” Mehdiyev said. “It will be useful for both entrepreneurs and customs authorities, as it will improve the quality of customs services provided.”

In adition to partnering with IBM, Mehdiyev said Azerbaijan is working with other countries on bilateral agreements to use blockchain technology in other areas.

“In this direction, we are implementing a project with Ukraine with the support of Georgia and Moldova,” he said.

In February 2018, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Taxes explored blockchain technology to help organize the work of tax bodies at a higher level. At the time, Mikayil Jabbarov, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Taxes, said that technologies, such as blockchain, are the basis for increasing the level of voluntary compliance with tax legislation.
