RaspAnd OS has released the latest version of its operating system for Raspberry Pi computers, with support for Aptoide, a blockchain-based alternative to Google’s app store.

RaspAnd OS, develop by Arnie Exton, is an Android-based operating system for the Raspberry Pi, a series of small single-board computers developed in the UK by the Raspberry Pi Foundation to promote teaching of basic computer science in schools and in developing countries.

The latest version, called RaspAnd Pie 9, has been updated to Android 9.0, allowing users to run Google’s mobile OS on Raspberry Pi 3 Model B and Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ computers. The RaspAnd Build 190315, which is now available for purchase for $9 from the developer’s website, includes “the Linux 4.14.61 kernel and excellent Wi-Fi support for both Raspberry Pi 3 models.” It comes pre-installed with the Google Chrome web browser, Aptoide app manager, ES File Explorer file manager, Termux terminal emulator, Nova Launcher app, AIDA64 system information tool, and the Rotation Control Pro app for controlling user screen’s orientation.

Since the latest version doesn’t come with support for the Google Play store, users will only be able to download Android apps using the Aptoide package manager, which boast more than 30,000 apps, including some that are not available on the Google Play Store for violating Google’s policies.

Exton warned that the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B and Model B+ computers have their limitations, so some apps might not work as expected or at all. However, he said all pre-installed apps work very well, including Spotify, which users can install with Aptoide.
