Blockchain Services To Be Implemented In Dubaibr>
Smart Dubai director general Dr. Aisha Bint Butti Bin Bishr said they are aiming to complete the roll out of over 20 blockchain applications this year.
The Smart Dubai initiative aims to make Dubai the smartest city in the world by 2020. The initiative is supported by a tiered partnership framework. It enables government, private-sector, and institutional partnerships to encourage engagement and collaboration.
During her keynote speech at the Unlock Blockchain Forum, the director general said that efforts are underway to make the region the blockchain capital of the world.
“While others were still debating the prospects of this new technology, we got to work,” said Bishr. “We are making Dubai the blockchain capital of the world. We have 20 public sector blockchain use cases and it’s only the beginning. Dubai took the forward-thinking approach and broke ground on the bold Dubai Blockchain Strategy, and by supporting events such as the Unlock Blockchain Forum, we are building a platform to share our learnings and prepare Dubai, and the world, for the future of blockchain.”
The blockchain applications are in various fields. Some of them are in road and transport, energy, health, and education. The Dubai Police, Water Authority, Dubai Electricity, and the Knowledge and Human Development Authority are some of the organizations taking part in the blockchain pilot project.
“Our deadline is 2020, but my aim for blockchain implementation is 2018,” said Bishr. “We have partnered with IBM and Consensys as both strategic adviser and consultant for this strategy. We are working with them on two parallels – one is to develop use cases and the other is to develop a plan for the whole city.”
Bishr said they are building the digital backbone of the city. She believes blockchain is one of the fundamental layers of that backbone. Smart Dubai is also looking into a framework on how to organize the government and private sector individuals around the the technology.
