Blockchain startup Chia Network has appointed Bram Cohen as its new chief executive officer, replacing co-founder Ryan Singer, who is stepping away to focus on his family.

Chia Network is building a blockchain based on proofs of space and time to make a cryptocurrency which is less wasteful, more decentralized, and more secure. In March 2018, the startup has raised $3.4 million in a seed funding round and is backed by a roster of prominent investors, including Naval Ravikant, Andreessen Horowitz, Greylock Partners, Galaxy Investment Group, and others.

Cohen is a computer programmer best known as the author of the peer-to-peer (P2P) BitTorrent protocol, as well as the first file sharing program to use the protocol, also known as BitTorrent. He left BitTorrent in a day to day capacity to co-found Chia Network in the fall of 2017.

A Chia spokesperson confirmed the leadership changes, adding that that current CFO and general counsel Mitch Edwards will take on existing business development relationships.
