Cryptocurrency exchange Kraken has appointed Marco Santori as the company’s new Chief Legal Officer (CLO).

Founded in 2011, Kraken is one of the world’s largest and oldest crypto exchanges with the widest selection of digital assets and national currencies. Kraken is the first exchange to display its market data on the Bloomberg Terminal, pass a cryptographically verifiable proof-of-reserves audit, and one of the first to offer leveraged margin trading. Its investors include Blockchain Capital, Digital Currency Group, Hummingbird Ventures, Money Partners Group, and SBI Investment.

Santori is best known in the legal world as the developer of the legal framework known as the Simple Agreement for Future Tokens (SAFT), a method for justifying initial coin offerings (ICO) without extensive legal filings. Most recently, Santori served as President and Chief Legal Officer for and as a law Partner at both Cooley LLP and Pillsbury Winthrop before that. He is also an advisor to the International Monetary Fund, the Blockchain Ambassador to the State of Delaware, and was the Chairman of the Regulatory Affairs Committee of the Bitcoin Foundation.

In a press release, Kraken said that Santori will use his experience with regulators, banks, payment service providers, broker-dealers, and several other key industry players to drive the next phase of the company’s growth.

“I expect to continue my work in creating a regulatory environment that fosters innovation while sanctifying consumer well-being,” said Santori. “Internally, I aim to create an environment of ability and success for all things legal – from product innovation to business partnerships and corporate governance. Kraken’s impeccable team has built a rocket ship. I hope to support them on the journey skyward.”
