The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) of South Korea is planning to use blockchain technology to ensure the safety of imported food products.

The MFDS is responsible for promoting the public health by ensuring the safety and efficiency of foods, pharmaceuticals, medical devices and cosmetics as well as supporting the development of the food and pharmaceutical industries. The main goal is to offer people safe foods and drugs.

The MFDS announced that it is planning to build a blockchain-based intelligent import food integration system to prevent the forgery and alteration of information of imported food products. The system will reportedly use blockchain technology to prevent tampering of hygiene certificate. It will also include information collection and analysis automation of hazardous materials and self-diagnostic service to importers.

“This system is planned to improve the efficiency of the management system by linking information on imported food from overseas local inspection, information on customs clearance and distribution stage, and integrating systems by agriculture, fisheries, marine products and processed food sector,” the ministry said.

The MFDS said that it will be hosting a briefing session for applicants who wish to bid for the project on January 30.
