A few weeks ago, the city of Plattsburgh, NY became the first in the US to ban cryptocurrency mining. Not because of tax evasion or illegal trading, but because cryptocurrency miners were monopolizing the area’s cheap electricity, causing local prices to skyrocket. Plattsburgh isn’t the only jurisdiction to scrutinize and punish energy-hogging miners.
