Vietnam’s Largest Telecom Operator Enters Blockchian Spacebr>
Viettel Group, the largest telecommunications operator in Vietnam, has created a new company to provide blockchain solutions in the country.
Viettel Group is a state-owned enterprise wholly owned and operated by the Ministry of Defense. The group controls almost 90% of the mobile market, with the rest controlled by Vietnamobile with 8%, Gmobile with 3.2% and S-Fone with 0.1%. Viettel has over 70,000 employees inside and outside the country, and served 63 million subscribers.
The new company, called Viettel Enterprise Solutions Corporation, was established earlier this month to focus on providing information and communication technology solutions to the governmental and commercial sectors, and to assist in building a digital government.
During the “Blockchain at Viettel” workshop in HCM City yesterday, Ngô Vĩnh Quý, deputy general director of the corporation, said that blockchain is a technology that will change the world and Viettel would like to catch up with global development trends. Ngô claimed that Viettel has the financial resources, human resources, network infrastructure, huge data center, research and development facilities, large internal environment, and other advantages to learn and deploy blockchain technology.
“Blockchain is an unlimited ecosystem,” Ngô said. “The most difficult task for Viettel is choosing the most effective blockchain technology that can be applied in daily life.”
Ngô added that Viettel Enterprise Solutions Corporation has already created a blockchain solution for medical file management. The solution enables the connection of entire medical networks, including the Ministry of Health, provincial health departments, patients, and other related entities on the nationwide level.
“We have successfully trialled the model and are waiting for approval from the health ministry,” Ngô said.
In 2019, the new company plans to expand its blockchain research to cover telecommunications, education, finance, transport, and energy. The goal is to become Vietnam’s leading blockchain technology provider in the next five years.
