Canadian mobile messaging app Kik is partnering with game engine creator Unity Technologies to enable game developers to use Kik’s Kin cryptocurrency to reward players.

Kik, which was founded in 2009 by University of Waterloo students, recently said that it will deploy its Kin token on multiple blockchains to enhance liquidity and efficiency within its ecosystem. Kin will be using the Stellar blockchain platform to improve Kin’s accessibility and functionality for digital services. The ethereum blockchain platform, on which the tokens were initially launched, will be used for liquidity.

Unity Technologies is a video game development company which is best known for the development of Unity, a licensed game engine. Unity Technologies boasts a thriving community of millions of developers, including large publishers, indie studios, students, and hobbyists. Interactive content made with Unity reaches nearly 3 billion devices worldwide.

Through the partnership, Kin will create a gaming-specific software development kit (SDK) for millions of Unity developers globally, allowing them to build and design with Kin as an integral part of their games from the very beginning. The Kin Gaming SDK will become part of the Unity Asset Store, a marketplace for gaming tools and services.

Kik’s goal for Kin is to create an ecosystem of digital services. Kin is also planning to launch the Kin Rewards Engine (KRE), which can incentivize developers to create valuable digital services for users in the Kin ecosystem. This will allow developers to make a fair return based on the number of users of their services. Through the KRE, Kin will introduce a daily reward that will be distributed to developers based on their contribution to the entire ecosystem.

“Our initial partners need to work hand-in-hand with us to create the tools and services that will serve as the foundation of the Kin Ecosystem,” said Dany Fishel, executive vice president of partnerships at Kin. “With Unity, we get a partner committed to democratizing development, solving hard problems and enabling success, which aligns perfectly with our goal of creating a thriving ecosystem that maximizes the value of Kin for developers.”

“Developers benefit when they can monetize digital experiences and quickly expand transactions across global markets,” said Hubert Larenaudie, President APAC at Unity Technologies. “We are continuously looking for top companies in the space who understand consumer experiences and believe that the combination of Kik’s experience and user base, along with Kin, provides many opportunities for developers.”
