Coinbase Sued in Texas Over Alleged Blockchain Patent Infringement
br>On Thursday, May 7, 2026, VM Innovations I, LLC filed a patent infringement complaint in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas against Coinbase Global, Inc., alleging infringement of seven blockchain-related patents.
The patents in question cover advancements in blockchain network architecture, including cross-chain interoperability, multi-tier blockchain scalability, transaction aggregation, and security filtering.
VM Innovations claims that Coinbase’s Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol (CCTP), Coinbase Wallet, Base applications, Verified Pools, and Scalable Blockchain Address Risk Scoring System infringe upon their patents. Specifically, the asserted patents address enabling value conversions between different blockchain networks using client-side key signing and server-side transaction generation, combining multiple private blockchain blocks into single public blockchain blocks with synchronized smart contracts, aggregating multiple value conversions, calculating net amounts, and using tether tokens for cross-chain conversions, and utilizing separate filter smart contracts and machine learning to prevent fraudulent transactions in real-time.
The complaint asserts jurisdiction based on federal patent law and establishes venue in the Northern District of Texas, noting that Coinbase is incorporated in Texas and maintains a registered office in Dallas. VM Innovations alleges that Coinbase had prior knowledge of some of the patents through previous USPTO proceedings.
For each patent, VM Innovations seeks damages for direct, induced, and contributory infringement. The company is requesting monetary compensation, including reasonable royalties, ongoing licensing fees, and attorney fees, as well as permanent injunctive relief during the patents’ terms. VM Innovations has also demanded a jury trial under Federal Rule 38.
