Bitfinex Hacker’s Wife Receives 18-Month Sentence for Laundering Stolen Bitcoin
br>On Monday, November 18, 2024, U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly sentenced Heather Morgan to 18 months in prison for her role in laundering stolen bitcoin from the crypto exchange Bitfinex. Morgan’s sentencing follows her guilty plea last year to charges of money laundering conspiracy and conspiracy to defraud the government. Her husband, Ilya Lichtenstein, was sentenced to five years in prison the previous week and received credit for time served since his arrest in February 2022.
Lichtenstein admitted to using sophisticated hacking methods to steal nearly 120,000 bitcoin from Bitfinex in 2016. According to federal prosecutors, he enlisted Morgan’s assistance in laundering the stolen funds. The couple employed various techniques, including executing numerous small crypto transactions and buying gold coins, which Morgan subsequently buried. IRS agents characterized their laundering methods as among the most complex they had encountered.
At the time of the theft, the 120,000 bitcoin was valued at approximately $71 million. However, based on current bitcoin prices, the amount is now estimated to be worth over $10 billion. Prosecutors noted that while Morgan was initially unaware of the precise origins of the funds, she did recognize that the money was derived from illicit activities. It was only in early 2020 that Lichtenstein explicitly informed her of his involvement in the Bitfinex hack, yet Morgan continued to assist in laundering the proceeds.
In her court filings, Morgan expressed remorse for her actions and requested a sentence of time served. The prosecution recommended a reduced sentence of 18 months, citing Morgan’s “substantial assistance” to law enforcement and her comparatively “lower-level” role in the operation.
Following the sentencing, Morgan stated that she felt “relieved” to have the opportunity to speak publicly and share her side of the story. She expressed her intention to communicate her thoughts and experiences from the past three years in the near future.
