Blockchain Association Names CFTC Commissioner Summer Mersinger as New CEO
br>On Wednesday, May 14, 2025, Blockchain Association, a prominent trade group representing the cryptocurrency industry in Washington, D.C., named CFTC Commissioner Summer Mersinger as its new Chief Executive Officer.
Mersinger’s appointment signals a new phase in the organization’s efforts to influence U.S. digital asset policy. She will assume the role on June 2, 2025, following her tenure at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), where her final day will be May 30, 2025.
Mersinger brings over 20 years of experience in public policy and regulation to the position. Currently a CFTC Commissioner, she has been instrumental in shaping federal financial market regulations, including those affecting digital assets.
Before joining the CFTC, Mersinger served in senior roles in both chambers of Congress and as a longtime advisor to Senate Majority Leader John Thune. Her extensive background in legislative and regulatory processes equips her to guide Blockchain Association in advocating for clear and progressive digital asset policies.
Marta Belcher, President of the Blockchain Association’s Board, expressed enthusiasm for Mersinger’s appointment, highlighting her leadership as vital for advancing the crypto industry’s interests during a critical period for policy development. The organization aims to promote legislation that supports innovation, fosters industry growth, and upholds the principles of decentralized technology.
Mersinger succeeds Kristin Smith, who significantly expanded the Association’s influence during her tenure. Under Smith’s leadership, the organization grew from a small team to a major presence on Capitol Hill, with membership increasing from a few crypto firms to over 125 leading organizations. The Board acknowledged Smith’s impactful contributions, noting her role in establishing the Association as a key player in Washington.
Sarah Milby, currently the Head of Policy at Blockchain Association, will serve as interim CEO from May 16 until Mersinger takes over on June 2.
