Turkcell, the largest mobile phone operator in Turkey, has introduced a new blockchain service for ID Management.

Turkcell offers mobile communication and fixed voice services, and broadband services that consist of mobile broadband, fiber to the home/building, and ADSL. As of December 31, 2017, it had approximately 15.6 million prepaid subscribers and 18.5 million postpaid subscribers, and approximately 2.1 million fixed line customers. The company covers 3.1 million homes with its fiber infrastructure.

Announced at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019, the new blockchain service is designed to give the user control over personal data and ensure personal privacy with General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) compliant ID Management solution. The solution stores the information required for verification of users in the blockchain network and removes additional identity verifications, which also enables Turkcell to provide new use-cases to enterprises.

During the MWC conference, Turkcell also announced a blockchain-based donation use case that includes the ID management solution to verify the donation eligibility for those in need.

“Turkcell helps rebuilding the trust in donation with a secure verification solution,” the company said. “The solution offers an end-to-end Turkcell experience – customers can donate via the communication and life platform BiP and use Paycell as a payment medium.”

Serkan Ozturk, Turkcell Customer Experience and Information Technologies Executive Vice President, said that using blockchain technology is essential to improve customer experience of their digital services and solutions, which remains as top priority in the design of their services.

“This is why we joined the global blockchain consortium of telecom carriers, The Carrier Blockchain Study Group (CBSG),” said Ozturk. “Our blockchain solutions provide secure digital payments, barter systems, identity verification and Internet of Things (IoT) applications. These efforts will help us improve our digital services and raise the bar in customer experience.”
