CoinFlip and Athena Bitcoin Join CAFE Association as Founding Members

On Thursday, January 29, 2026, the Cryptocurrency Anti-Fraud Education (CAFE) Association announced that CoinFlip and Athena Bitcoin have joined the organization as its first founding industry members. This move signifies a growing commitment among digital asset companies to foster trust, transparency, and enhanced consumer protection within the cryptocurrency sector.

The inclusion of CoinFlip and Athena Bitcoin underscores a collaborative effort among industry leaders to promote best practices, improve consumer understanding, and support well-considered public policy as the adoption of digital assets continues to expand.

Edward “Coach” Weinhaus, Esq., interim founding executive director of the CAFE Association, stated, “Digital asset adoption is accelerating with more individuals moving from initial interest to active participation. CoinFlip and Athena demonstrate the kind of leadership necessary to ensure consumer access, education, and support. The association, with their support, will advance initiatives that strengthen consumer protections and foster consumer confidence in the digital economy.”

As founding members, CoinFlip and Athena Bitcoin will contribute to CAFE’s initial projects, which include:

  • Research and analysis on trends in digital asset usage and fraud protection
  • Consumer education campaigns to support informed participation
  • Industry best-practice frameworks for customer protection and system design

CAFE’s launch comes at a time when digital asset usage is becoming increasingly mainstream, and consumers are seeking clarity, resources, and reliable information. As adoption has grown, scammers have been misusing various financial tools, including wire transfers, prepaid cards, and cash-to-crypto services, as part of broader social engineering schemes. Strengthening consumer protection requires education, visibility, and consistent standards across all payment methods. Member companies play a crucial role in this effort by providing practical expertise and demonstrating leadership in transparency, access, and customer support focused on consumer protection.

Anna Milne, CAFE Director of Research, emphasized the importance of industry collaboration, stating, “This is just the beginning. We call on more industry leaders to join us in this vital mission: educating the public, advancing anti-fraud best practices and ensuring trust in digital finance. Together, we can educate consumers about what safeguards to look for in cryptocurrency companies while ensuring the industry remains at the forefront of consumer protection.”

CoinFlip and Athena Bitcoin bring extensive experience in operating consumer-facing digital asset services at scale, providing valuable insights into how education, clear communication, and user-friendly design can broaden participation while reinforcing consumer confidence and protection.

Membership in CAFE is open to cryptocurrency companies of all sizes, including exchanges, wallet platforms, and fintech businesses serving consumers. Members gain access to educational resources, industry frameworks, collaborative research opportunities, and public recognition for their commitment to responsible digital finance.

This announcement follows CAFE’s official launch as a nonprofit organization focused on combating cryptocurrency fraud, which was reported by BlockTribune on October 9, 2025. At that time, the association announced it was seeking new members who are “dedicated to stopping cryptocurrency fraud, educating the public about cryptocurrency scams, and equipping industry players with the tools and best practices to protect consumers.”

The CAFE Association has also been actively involved in discussions regarding the approach to cryptocurrency enforcement and regulation. For instance, in November 2025, during a Federalist Society panel, the CAFE Association initiated a discussion by questioning Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird about the balance between addressing crypto scams and avoiding “overzealous prosecution.”

Bird likened contemporary fraud scams that direct victims to use crypto kiosks, that have no involvement with the fraud, to earlier schemes involving gift cards and mailed cash. Utah Attorney General Derek Brown responded, emphasizing the need for Utah’s approach to crypto prosecutions to balance enforcement with innovation, highlighting the importance of connecting evidentiary dots without hindering beneficial technologies.

Similarly, at the same panel, Alaska Attorney General Stephen J. Cox argued for a more cautious approach than Iowa’s litigiousness. He stated that Alaska’s approach to cryptocurrency enforcement should encourage innovation while targeting prosecutions of malicious actors. Cox’s approach would leave non-fraud participating kiosk operators alone. His comment followed CAFE’s question to Attorney General Bird.

Anna Milne, CAFE Association’s Director of Research, stated that anti-fraud education benefits the entire industry. In its continuing call for members, she said,  “Stopping fraud through education and best practices is our primary focus.” When asked about the types of members the association accepts, she responded, “Membership is open to responsible cryptocurrency companies that share our goals, have an industry-wide view, and elevate customer service.”
