Complaint Accuses Website and Romanian Woman of Operating Elaborate Cryptocurrency Fraud
br>On Wednesday, August 14, 2024, Bruce Cohn filed a complaint in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas against Anna Popescu, the website TrustHFTwallet.com, and unnamed individuals referred to as John Does 1-20.
In the complaint, Cohn alleges that he fell victim to an international cryptocurrency scam orchestrated by the defendants. According to the filing, Cohn met Popescu, who claims to be a citizen of Romania, on a dating website in June 2024. Popescu later told Cohn about her success investing in cryptocurrencies and introduced him to the TrustHFTwallet platform, claiming she could teach him to do the same and make high returns.
Cohn proceeded to deposit over $2.4 million worth of cryptocurrency assets into his TrustHFTwallet account over several months, as instructed by Popescu and the platform’s customer service. His balance appeared to rapidly grow, eventually showing assets valued at more than $4.5 million. However, when Cohn tried to make a withdrawal, TrustHFTwallet claimed he needed to “level up” his account with additional deposits before accessing the funds.
The complaint states that TrustHFTwallet was never a legitimate trading platform and that no actual trading took place. The account balances and transactions shown to Cohn were fake, designed to make the platform appear functional and convince Cohn to keep investing. In reality, the assets Cohn transferred were simply stolen by the defendants. Cohn soon realized he had been scammed out of his life savings.
Cohn is suing under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, alleging the defendants formed a criminal enterprise. He accuses them of wire fraud and is seeking treble damages, return of the stolen assets, punitive damages, attorneys’ fees, and injunctive relief.
Court documents indicate the TrustHFTwallet scam targeted dozens of victims and stole millions over the past year through a similar pattern of deception.
