Crypto compliance and risk management firm TRM Labs has appointed Ari Redbord as the company’s head of legal and government affairs.

Founded in 2018, TRM helps financial institutions to measure, monitor, and mitigate their cryptocurrency risk exposure so they can safely embrace cryptocurrency-related transactions, products, and partnerships. The company’s risk management platform includes solutions for cryptocurrency KYC/AML, entity risk scoring, transaction monitoring, threat intelligence, and wallet screening. TRM launched out of the startup accelerator Y Combinator this summer. Since then, it has delivered its cryptocurrency compliance and risk management solutions to global financial institutions including major banks, brokerages, and exchanges across US, Latin America, Asia, and Europe.

Redbord has previously served as a senior adviser to the undersecretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, at the US Treasury. Prior to joining the US Treasury, he represented domestic and international corporations and their officers in grand jury investigations and criminal prosecutions and also in parallel civil and administrative proceedings and congressional investigations. Redbord received his Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center and his Bachelor of Arts from Duke University.

In his new role at TRM, Redbord will help the platform build its risk-based anti-money laundering programs for cryptocurrency and digital assets.

While Redbord previously worked with government law enforcement agencies, he said the focus will not just be on “the long arm of the law.”

“Actually, I think in a way it’s quite the opposite, because a company like TRM allows for less regulation, quite frankly, by allowing governments around the world to be more comfortable that they are able to identify suspicious activity and get those bad actors out of this,” Redbord said.
