San Diego Man Sues Alleged Leader of $37M Cryptocurrency Theft Ring
br>On Monday, July 22, 2024, Anton Ewing, a resident of San Diego County, filed a civil lawsuit against Chirag Tomar and other unnamed individuals and entities in the United States District Court for the Southern District of California.
According to the complaint, Tomar is accused of orchestrating an elaborate cryptocurrency theft and money laundering scheme that stole over $250,000 from Ewing’s Coinbase account. Ewing claims that starting in 2020, Tomar and unnamed co-conspirators created fake websites designed to mimic the popular cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase to trick users into providing login credentials. They allegedly stole login details from over 542 victims.
Once in control of accounts, the complaint states the defendants swiftly transferred victims’ bitcoin and other cryptocurrency holdings to offshore wallets controlled by Tomar and the criminal group. Ewing alleges the stolen digital currencies, worth over $37 million total, were laundered through money transfers between cryptocurrency exchanges and the conversion of funds into different cryptocurrencies in an effort to conceal the illicit money trail.
The lawsuit accuses Tomar and other defendants of violating federal racketeering laws through the operation of an enterprise engaged in wire fraud and money laundering. Ewing is seeking the return of his stolen Bitcoin as well as financial damages. According to the complaint, he incurred significant business losses due to being unable to access his Coinbase funds and spending time dealing with the aftermath of the crypto theft.
As digital currencies like Bitcoin continue growing in popularity and value, experts warn individuals must exercise strong security practices such as enabling two-factor authentication and avoiding suspicious links when accessing exchange accounts. Platforms also face pressure to bolster protections against phishing attacks and other cybercrimes exploiting the largely unregulated crypto space.
