Texas Woman Sentenced to Prison After Using $2.5M in Fraudulent Tax Refunds to Buy Crypto
br>On Wednesday, April 2, 2025, Legal Newsline reported that Jackie Marie Peters, a 53-year-old resident of Mansfield, Texas, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison by United States District Judge G. Murray Snow.
The sentencing, which took place on March 31, 2025, follows Peters’s guilty plea to charges of conspiracy to defraud. After completing her prison term, she will be subject to three years of supervised release.
Peters was involved in a scheme with co-conspirators that targeted an Arizona-based tax preparer firm. From January 2020 to April 2022, they unlawfully accessed the firm’s computer network, altering tax documents for more than 40 individuals without their consent and without the knowledge of the firm. As part of the fraudulent operation, Peters opened 10 bank accounts across different financial institutions. This allowed her and her associates to deposit numerous fraudulent tax refunds based on the tampered documents.
The total amount transferred from these accounts exceeded $2.5 million, which Peters used to purchase cryptocurrency.
The investigation into the case was conducted by the IRS Criminal Investigation Phoenix Field Office, while the prosecution was handled by the United States Attorney’s Office in the District of Arizona, located in Phoenix.
